Fresh Off the Press in AJOG MFM: Marchand Institute’s New Meta-Analysis on Single- vs. Double-Layer Uterine Closure and Cesarean Scar Outcomes

Greg J. Marchand, MD, FACS, FACOG, FICS has been named to the Fulbright Specialist Roster by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and World Learning. The appointment follows a full review of his candidacy by a Fulbright Specialist Peer Review Panel and carries a three year tenure that began on August 14, 2026 and runs through August 14, 2029.
What the Fulbright Specialist Program Is
The Fulbright Specialist Program is part of the wider Fulbright Program, the flagship international academic exchange effort of the United States government. It works differently from the traditional Fulbright Scholar award. Rather than a single long placement, host institutions abroad design their own short projects and request an American expert to come and work on them directly. Specialists collaborate with local faculty, clinicians and administrators on curriculum design, teaching, hands-on training workshops, research methodology and institutional capacity building.
Placement on the Roster means Dr. Marchand is now eligible to be matched with projects designed by foreign institutions in more than 150 countries over the course of his tenure. Roster placement is not itself a grant award. It places a candidate in the pool from which host institutions and the Department of State select for individual projects.
Why This Fits the Work We Already Do
Teaching surgeons has been the center of the Marchand Institute since it opened. The Institute runs an SLS accredited fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery affiliated with HonorHealth Four Peaks Medical Center, has published more than 135 peer reviewed papers, and has trained visiting physicians and research fellows from across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Techniques developed and published here are now taught as core content at several United States medical schools.
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery is exactly the kind of skill set that does not travel easily. It depends on training, repetition and access to the right instruments, and it is unevenly distributed around the world. A hospital in a low resource setting that wants to move from open hysterectomy to laparoscopic or single incision technique needs someone on site who can teach the operation, help build the curriculum around it, and leave behind faculty who can carry it forward. That is precisely what the Specialist Program is built for, and it is work Dr. Marchand is fluent in Spanish and well positioned to do.
