Funding, Independence & 501(c)(3) Status

Dr. Greg Marchand’s research is not funded by industry. No pharmaceutical company, device manufacturer or commercial sponsor pays for, reviews, or has any right of approval over the systematic reviews and meta-analyses published under his name.

His research and educational work is carried out through the Marchand Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit research and educational corporation in Mesa, Arizona (EIN 42-2857240), which he founded and directs. This page sets out that structure, the funding position, the preferred affiliation statement for co-authors and editors, his verified researcher identifiers, and where to find him this year.

Mission

The Institute exists to make gynecologic surgery less invasive, better evidenced and more widely available. Dr. Marchand pursues that through three activities: producing rigorous systematic reviews and meta-analyses that answer questions surgeons actually face; training surgeons through an accredited fellowship and simulation program; and developing and evaluating surgical techniques and instrumentation that reduce incision size, pain, recovery time and complications.

His founding commitment is that these advances should reach all women, regardless of nationality, economic class or ability to pay.

Non-Profit Status

The Marchand Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery is a not-for-profit research and educational corporation based in Mesa, Arizona, and is recognized by the United States Internal Revenue Service as exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

Contributions to the Institute are deductible by donors under IRC section 170, and the Institute is qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers and gifts under sections 2055, 2106 and 2522. Journalists, editors and grant administrators can confirm all of the above independently through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search using the EIN above.

No part of the Institute’s net earnings inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. Surplus from any activity is applied to the Institute’s research and educational programs. A copy of the IRS determination letter is available to media and prospective collaborators on request.

Funding and Independence

Dr. Marchand accepts no outside funding for his research program.

Dr. Marchand’s systematic reviews and meta-analyses are not supported by pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, professional societies, advocacy organizations or any other external sponsor. Neither he nor his investigators hold consulting agreements, advisory board fees, speaking fees, equity positions or royalty arrangements with pharmaceutical or medical device companies. Dr. Marchand openly declares no conflicts of interest.

Because there is no sponsor, there is no sponsor influence. No outside party selects his research questions, defines his comparators, reviews his manuscripts before submission, or has any right of approval over what he publishes. He publishes null results and results unfavorable to popular or commercially promoted techniques, and has done so repeatedly.

Dr. Marchand’s only institutional affiliations are with the participating hospitals of his fellowship program. Where he participates as a clinical trial site principal investigator, that work is compensated at fair market value for clinical services performed under a sponsor’s protocol; it is separate from, and does not fund, his research program.

Dr. Marchand does not solicit public donations. If that changes, it will be stated plainly on this page.
